Kozy Terrapin began on a road trip of the soul — born from music, grief, and love, and the belief that some things are better delivered by snail mail, enjoyed over a warm cup of tea or kava. Something beautiful is coming.

Hi Fellow Traveller. I'm Claudia — some people know me as Ms. Terrapin. I didn't grow up a Deadhead, but this music became the thing that carried me through the hardest and most tender chapters of my life. These 52 letters are my Road Trip of the Soul.
Dear Reader,
I want to tell you why I wrote 52 love letters, what inspired this journey, and how I ended up getting on the bus. That's the Grateful Dead bus — what Deadheads call the moment the music truly gets you, and you never look back.
My name is Claudia. I grew up between two worlds — born in New Jersey, raised in Bogotá, Colombia, then back to Miami Beach at twelve, right as my parents' marriage was ending. Music found me in the wreckage of that. I met a music teacher who inspired me, Mr. Doug Burris. I fell in love with the clarinet, became first chair at the Greater Miami Youth Symphony, and eventually won a scholarship to a conservatory — until life took a hard left, more than once, and eventually pulled me somewhere I never expected: Australia, a new career in technology, a first marriage, a daughter, a first divorce, and a long stretch of figuring out how to be a single mother and still somehow keep going.
Then I met Tim.
My relationship with Tim changed my life in deep and profound ways I never expected. Half-jokingly, we called each other “twin flames”, our shorthand for the strange, intense bond between us.
Tim was a Deadhead who had seen Jerry and the Grateful Dead hundreds of times in the late eighties and early nineties. He was such a staple at the lot scene that his recipe — Tim's Sumptuous Stir Fry — was featured in Elizabeth Zipern's cookbook "Cooking with the Dead."
And I didn't even know what a Deadhead was - for 12 years!
To me, the Deadhead community was those "happy hippies" who loved to dance and wear tie-dye, and honestly, as a conservatory-trained clarinetist and having played in a symphony orchestra, I was a bit of a music snob. Tim took me to see several local cover bands in Florida and many Dead & Company shows, and I used to think to myself that the music was just "okay, I guess", but it didn't really shake me or knock my socks off. It wasn't the best, nor the worst music I've ever heard. To me they were just another nostalgic sixties rock band, and I never really understood why there was such devoted, almost cult-like fandom around them.
But, I figured this was Tim's thing, and I went with it because I loved him, and respected it, even if I didn't understand it.
It was like this for me for many years, until one day, when I least expected it, and in a moment that changed my life forever, I was shown the light.
That is the moment when I got on the bus, and I have never looked back since.
These next 52 letters, which you can read over the span of a year (one letter per week), are my personal memoir, and they also tell the story of my beautiful, tumultuous, and sometimes crazy love adventures with Tim. They are also the story of how someone like me—who didn't even like the Grateful Dead and didn't 'get' their music—ended up fully and fervently on the bus.
This is my personal journey; of the unexpected synchronicities, the grief and the joy, the hilarious moments and the hard ones, and the love that carried me through, and sometimes the scary adventure of how I became a Deadhead.
Jerry Garcia once described Deadheads as "that person..looking for an adventure in America... something to do that's not like what everybody else does…and a chance to get out and scare themselves a little."
I wasn't looking for adventure. I wasn't trying to scare myself. But somehow, that's exactly what found me.
I didn't know it when I first stepped onto that bus, but this path would challenge me, shake me to the core, and require more courage than I ever knew I possessed.
It is my raw and honest storytelling about the many twists and turns in my life, the many miracles that I received, the friends that I made along the way, and the ultimate adventures of my Road Trip of the Soul.
So, sit back, relax, and get 'kozy'. Pour yourself a favorite cup of tea, java, or kava. And if you are open to adventure, as a stranger stopping another stranger, we are now friends.
Hop on, buckle up, and sign up for the adventure of your life, in this Road trip of the Soul.
Your Friend,
Claudia 🧡
